Logic or Superstitions? - Ahmad Abu Asbeh 9C

Logic or Superstitions?        Superstitions make up most of generational belief systems which get carried on from one generation to the next. As stated by Natalie Wolchover on www.livescience.com on the origins of famous superstitions: “Ancient Romans believed mirrors held fragments of our souls, and that shattering them therefore created a crack in our souls too.” Which is why this argumentative essay is being conducted to discuss the world’s recent decrease in superstition beliefs.      The world has become less superstitious. As mentioned by Russel Bertrand in his argumentative essay: “Fear is the main source of superstition, and one of the main sources of cruelty. To conquer fear is the beginning of wisdom”. Which clearly states that the nature of superstitions is based mainly off of fear and not logical thinking, and in the new day and age of straight-forward and logical answers being 5 seconds away from the inquirer, the need of su...

People and superstitions - Faris Abdullatif 9c

People and superstitions       People have always believed in superstitions when progressing through history. Some of our superstitions can be found thousands of years in the past, such as the belief found in ancient Egypt 5000 years ago according to Natalie. These beliefs or superstitions can be found in many forms including literature. As a social studies expert, I strongly believe that people still believe in superstitions based on the pieces of literature. I read which include “the hollow”, “dover beach”, “darkness” that people believe and trust.       To start off most superstitious people come off as unwise and the amount of unwise people are spreading in modern times. This is because people have a growing fear of the unknown and do certain actions to protect themselves even though its useless and they cant seem to conquer this fear and to conquer fear is the beginning of wisdom according to Bertrand. This makes me bel...

Superstitions Continue To Thrive - Muna Almumalah 9A

Superstitions Continue To Thrive     Have superstitions ever really gone extinct? “superstitions are defined as a belief or way of behaving based on fear of the unknown and faith in magic or luck. A belief that certain events or things will bring good or bad luck” (Britannica, 16/12/2023) as they are found in many pieces of recent literature like “negative mirror” and “superstitions”. As a social studies expert, I believe that people still believe in superstitions to a fair extent as they include them in recent literature pieces and include the spread of people fearing the unknown.   After the spread ...

Superstitions - Leen Qabaja 9A

Superstitions    Imagine living in a world in which a black cat crossing your path is considered bad luck. Superstitions are beliefs or ways of behaving that explain the unexplainable and bring comfort. In addition, superstitions change the way in which people view the world. Personally. I think that superstitions have evolved overtime, changing to adapt to culture and periods of time, with many people basing their behaviors on varied beliefs, and not relying on basic facts.   As seen all over the world, superstitions can bring fear, they can change the way people think and act. Moreover, those beliefs create horror. For example, as seen in the Hollow by Kelly Deschler where the poet’s beliefs are embedded within the poem. (Wolchover, Natalie) in this piece of literature, the readers understand how the beliefs of this poet can change her life, proving that superstitions are always developing and creating new thoughts and ideas.     Not only t...

Superstitions - Sami Albeiruti 9A

Superstitions      Do people still believe in superstitions or have they stepped closer to the realm of science and reasoning? This question has perplexed sociologists and social studies experts for years.   Superstition is “defined as the belief or behavior that is based on the fear of the unknown and faith in magic and luck” (citation: Encyclopedia Britannica, source 1). According to numerous works of literature, I believe that the belief in superstition is abundant.      Rationalization of an idea reflects on the writer’s belief in the concept. “Beware: Do not read this poem” offers statistics in the poem referring to the amounts of missing people. The writer links the superstition of the old lady in the mirror to the statistic of missing people, obviously relating two of the contexts in an attempt of rationalization. This would reflect on the writer’s opinion of the superstition as a real phenomenon, as a writer with no belief, would rat...

Superstitions in Poems - Natalie Naber 9A

Superstitions in Poems      Imagine that you live in a world where every time a new belief or superstition is mentioned in a piece of writing, everyone starts believing it, and are taking it very seriously. This is what we are currently seeing in our world, where new beliefs from literature, and poems, are emerging and becoming believed by people around the world. Poems are playing a role in shaping people’s beliefs, through new, fictional superstitions mentioned. I believe that poems are making people believe in superstitions and that this is increasing over time.     Poems aid in passing down old, traditional superstitions to future generations of specific cultures to keep them alive. This is also leading to the spread of these superstitions to other cultures, as these poems that mention superstitions are becoming more wide-spread, which are being believed in. This leads to the increase pf people’s beliefs in superstitions. An example of a poem th...

Superstitions      Do you believe in superstitions? How about the fact that it is conquering the world? Superstitions are belief systems that are set by individuals due to fear of the unknown or ignorance of something. In your opinion, to what extent do people believe in superstitions?   In my view, people strongly believe in superstitions due to the fact that it could be part of their culture and is a psychological mindset. Superstations impact people massively and conquers their mindset.      Culture plays major role in the beliefs of individuals which shapes their identity. Moreover, each person adapts to their culture which results in the superstition to become a part of one’s life. This can be seen “according to Turkish belief, blue acts as a shield against evil and even absorbs negativity” (Williams, Victoria). This demonstrates that in Turkey’s culture blue protects against bad luck that cause people to change their mindset and prefer...
