Are superstitions real? - Ali Khatib 9B

Image
Name: Ali Khatib Grade: 9B   Do you believe that a ladder can give you bad luck? Superstitions a beliefs or ways of behaving that are based on the fear of the unknown and faith in magic or luck. (Encyclopedia Britannica). I firmly believe that superstitions aren’t real and are false. As time and events pass superstitions just keep getting proven wrong also because most of the time it is based on someone’s belief system.        To begin with, superstitions keep getting proven wrong and that it is false. First off, it states that in 1987 it says that if you open an umbrella indoors it somehow gives you bad luck, but no evidence nor example was given. “Clumsy soring mechanisms made them veritable hazards. To open umbrellas. A rigidly spoked umbrella opening suddenly in a small room could seriously injure an adult or child. Even a minor accident could provoke unpleasant words or a minor quarrel” (Panati). In another source, they used to walk un...

Are superstitions real? - Jad Ahmad 9B

Image
Name: Jad Ahmad Grade: 9B      To what extent do people believe in superstitions ?” Superstitions are defined as a way of behaving based on the fear of the unknown and faith in magic or luck”.(Britannica). Therefore I firmly disbelief that superstitions are real as they could have affecting factors such as time and environment.        Superstitions are affected by time. Due to time factors and coincidence, people have made up myths known as superstitions due to them having a good or bad experience with a certain object at a certain time. This was shown by (the extraordinary origins of everyday things) “In eighteenth-century London when metal spoked umbrellas began to become a rainy day sight their stiff clumsy spring mechanism made verticals hazards to open indoors”          Furthermore, superstitions are affected by the environment. To justify the statement, according to ( author ) “a ladder leani...

Do people believe in superstitions based on literature? Yahya Abdallateef 9B

Image
Name: Yahya Abdallateef  Class: 9B   Do people believe in superstitions based on literature?         Did you know that billions of people don’t believe in superstitions based on literature? Superstitions are stories and beliefs created to explain weird or unknown occurrences. I firmly believe in the fact that people still believe in these superstitions due to the improvement in education that people receive nowadays and the development of science allowing for more logical answers to weird events.        To begin with, the education people receive plays a huge role in their beliefs. As people grow, they become more experienced and wiser. So they would understand that superstitions created were made by uneducated people. For example, according to Wolchover, Natalie in “The surprising Origins of 9 common Superstitions” “A ladder leaning against a wall originates from ancient Egypt and is sacred because it shows a triangle which sy...

Is it Delusion or Reality? Seera Alrawi 9B

Image
Is it Delusion or Reality By: Seera Alrawi   class: 9B   Are individuals being reasonable or delusional? If I break a mirror, am I cursed for eternity? I firmly disbelieve in superstitions, and I oppose individuals who rely on them as they do not align with my beliefs and education system. Superstitions are practices made up and believed by people based on fear of the unknown or bad luck.   To begin with, superstitions do not align with my belief system. I believe that one cannot become cursed with bad luck only because they walked under a ladder or broke a mirror. Superstitions do not align with my religion to a certain extent, as I believe God is the only one who can protect us from bad luck, as well as the existence of black magic. According to Encyclopedia Britannica, “superstitions are defined as a belief or a way of behaving based on fear of the unknown and faith in magic or luck: a belief that certain events or things will bring good or bad luck.” The source...

Fearing The Unknown - Zainab Sudani 9B

Image
Name: Zainab Sudani Grade: 9B    To what extent do people nowadays believe in superstitions? Superstitions are similar to myths as they are mostly made up based on either events that made a significant change in history, or experiences individuals have been through. I firmly disbelieve in superstitions as they do not align with my culture and the belief system that I was raised to follow.   To begin with, every culture is different from the other. They each have their own traditions and beliefs, such as the Ancient Romans. “They used to believe that mirrors represent our souls, and if these mirrors shattered, our souls did too.” (Wolchover, Natalie.) “Another superstition found in the Turkish culture, the colour blue is a shield to protect from the evil and reduces the negative energy.” (Williams, Victoria.)   My own culture has several superstitions, such as the evil eye to protect people from any type of harm or envy. Although it is my own culture, I st...

Are you Superstitious? - Layla Amjad 9B

Image
Name: Layla Amjad Grade: 9B    To what extent do people still believe in superstitions? Superstitions are defined as a belief or a way of behaving that is based on fear of the unknown and faith in magic or luck; a belief that certain events or things will bring good or bad luck (Britannica). As a social studies expert, I firmly disbelieve in superstitions due to the unmatched cultural belief systems, faith and fear.       To  begin with, cultural belief systems play a huge role in our daily lives, back in the day scientists were unable to determine if a specific myth was true or not, therefore everyone had faith in their luck, although they used to tell each individual about their experiences with an object or a living thing as it did not affect their belief system due to their strong faith, In the “Beware: Do not read this poem “poem a vain women came up after years of surrounding herself with mirrors which lead to her disappearing whi...

Do Superstitions have limits? - Toleen Karazon 9B

Image
Name: Toleen Karazon Grade: 9B    Do superstitions have limits & boundaries? But what are they "superstitions defined as a belief or way of behaving that is based on fear and the unknown and faith in magic or luck: a belief that certain events or things will bring good or bad luck "-( encyclopedia Britannica as we have the example provided:" according to Turkish belief, blue acts as a shield against evil& even absorbs negativity." (Williams, Victoria 2016). Turkey have been always known for its superstitions& belief system, but why? What leads them to get these superstitions? Well “fear is the main source of superstitions, and one of the main sources of cruelly to conquer fear is the beginning of wisdom." (Russell, Bertrand. Unpopular essays) Most of these superstitions comes from ancient ages,, such as: "ancient romans believed mirrors held fragments of our souls, and that shattering them therefore  represented a crack in our souls, too" ...

Opening our Eyes - Lara Nakeeb 9B

Image
Name: Lara Nakeeb  Grade: 9B   Are you afraid? Assuming you have heard of superstitions, beliefs that stem from fear and belief in the unknown. Thankfully I am not afraid as I firmly disbelieve in superstitions as they can cause the spread of fear and lies as well as not having any sort of scientific evidence.       To begin with, superstitions create fear, although they also stem from it. Many people being fooled by these myths are so overtaken by fear that it can destroy their education and  former  beliefs. According to Bertrand Russell “Fear is the main source of cruelty. To conquer fear is the beginning of wisdom.”  (Russell, Bertrand).  This proves that the fear of the unknown can cloud people’s judgement. Furthermore, allowing yourself to believe in superstitions may also bring lies and false information. “According to Turkish belief, blue acts as a shield against evil and even absorbs negativity.”  (Williams Victo...

Superstitions in Literature. Raya Abu Atiyeh 9B

Superstitions in Literature   To what extent do people still believe in superstitions? How can superstitions be reflected in literature pieces? Superstitions are beliefs based on fear of the unknown and faith in luck. I firmly believe in superstitions as they do not align with my culture or religion.    To begin with, I do not relate to superstitions as they conflict with my culture and beliefs. Superstitions are becoming more prevalent in literature, with works like "The Hollow" and "Superstitions" emphasizing the significance of these beliefs in culture. Rather than adhering to tradition, superstitions challenge and reshape these beliefs. Sometimes, superstitions do not have any connection with cultural beliefs, as is the case with the two poems. According to Turkish culture, the colour blue acts as a shield against evil and negative energy. However, it is perplexing why people hold such beliefs that can lead to negativity. It is like judging a book by its cover,...

What is the effect of literature pieces on superstitions? Lamees Fakhri 9B

Image
What is the effect of literature pieces on superstitions?   Can some of our superstitions be related to literature? Superstitions are beliefs and practices based on magical ideas and myths. I firmly believe that literature can impact superstitions, as we gain different perspectives from reading about personal experiences, and people and authors often use superstitions as a coping mechanism to get through difficult times. Superstitions form based on personal experiences, which can vary from one person to another. Authors write about superstitions to change the way people see them. Superstitions are conveyed to the new generations, which leads to an increase in the number of people who believe in them. This is evident in works of literature, such as "Be Aware, Do Not Read This Poem" where the poet's negative experience with a broken mirror leads readers to believe that the action attracts misfortune. According to the Encyclopedia Britannica, "a belief or way of behavi...

A world of Superstitions. Kamal Ibrahim 9B

Image
A world of Superstitions    Have you noticed that the world is becoming more superstitious lately? More importantly, have you ever believed in superstitions? Superstitions are myths based on people’s belief systems, culture, and environment. And I firmly disbelieve in superstitions because of my culture and belief system.       Superstitions are getting more popular with time. Many people are starting to believe in superstitions because of their belief systems. Some religions believe that superstitions are true, but I personally disbelieve in that because my belief system and religion forbid it.      Another reason why people still believe in superstitions is because of their culture and the environment they live in. For example, a ladder leaning against a wall is a superstition that originated 5000 years ago in ancient Egypt. When the ladder leans on the wall, it makes the shape of a triangle, which triangles back then meant to them a...

Compasses of Life. Dima Darraji 9B

Image
Compasses of Life       Do you believe in superstitions? If so, then you are not alone! Superstitions are beliefs that stem from trust in magic and a false perception of causation. I firmly believe that these beliefs exist due to the influence of one's environment and the mark of historical events.      To begin with, the environment one is in impacts the basis for a belief system. Picture growing up in a community where others tend to be more superstitious; then, it is probable that you adopt this trait. As community members exchange tales and stories that concern superstitions, these stories become more influential with every retelling, furthering individual beliefs. Numerous literary works depict this concept, such as the poem “The Hollow” by Kelly Deschler, as it portrays the poet’s trust regarding the tale “The Legend of the Sleepy Hollow.” Her perspective is affected by the small town she calls home, demonstrating her fear of it when ...
