Do you believe that a ladder can give you bad luck? Superstitions a beliefs or ways of behaving that are based on the fear of the unknown and faith in magic or luck. (Encyclopedia Britannica). I firmly believe that superstitions aren’t real and are false. As time and events pass superstitions just keep getting proven wrong also because most of the time it is based on someone’s belief system.

To begin with, superstitions keep getting proven wrong and that it is false. First off, it states that in 1987 it says that if you open an umbrella indoors it somehow gives you bad luck, but no evidence nor example was given. “Clumsy soring mechanisms made them veritable hazards. To open umbrellas. A rigidly spoked umbrella opening suddenly in a small room could seriously injure an adult or child. Even a minor accident could provoke unpleasant words or a minor quarrel” (Panati). In another source, they used to walk under ladders, and nothing would happen to them “A ladder leaning against the wall is a superstition which originated over 5000 years ago in ancient Egypt. A ladder leaning against the wall forms a triangle and Egyptians regarded this shape as sacred” (The surprising origins of 9 common superstitions) so you can say that a shape is sacred and is important in life.

Moreover, superstitions are based on someone’s belief system based on what they believe in superstitions may be created or maybe believed in such as in the first source I show how in ancient Egypt they used to believe a shape was sacred “ A ladder leaning against the wall forms a triangle and Egyptians regarded this shape as sacred” (The surprising origins of 9 common superstitions) Also, in the second source it states that a colour can be your security and protect you “ According to Turkish beliefs, blue acts as a shield against the evil” (William victor 2016). So, how can you believe that a colour or a shape can be your god or your security?

In conclusion, after all this evidence and proof do you still believe in superstitions after all the sources and false things people worship and believe that it can protect them when even all this is based on fear and the unknown.

  1. I found the umbrella and the ladder superstitions very interesting! Never heard of them before. I liked how you included the faslifying proofs of these superstitions in your writing. I would suggest that you mention from which culture the umbrella superstition originates from. I would also suggest that you elaborate more on your personal beliefs regarding superstitions.
